CCTV allegedly showing Jeffrey Epstein walking across prison

CCTV of paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein's final moments has been released six years after he was found dead in what authorities described as a suicide. Around 11 hours of footage from August 9 and 10, 2019, in the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York City has been released as part of an investigation into his death. Epstein is shown being led to his cell by two guards who then walk away in the video, which was released by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) in a bid to shut down speculation about the cause of his death.

Authorities say the footage proves that the paedophile was not murdered to prevent him exposing powerful clients, as rumours have suggested, because no one is seen entering the area in the period before he was found unresponsive in his cell. Epstein was arrested on multiple charges including sex trafficking in July 2019, before being declared dead in hospital less than a month later.

Coroners ruled at the time that he had committed suicide by hanging, but conspiracy theories quickly sprung up suggesting he had been silenced before going on trial for his crimes.

A joint investigation by the DoJ and FBI has now also concluded that he died by suicide, however, with the footage of Epstein's last moments released publicly in keeping with a campaign pledge by US President Donald Trump.

It shows the disgraced financier walking across a common area of the correctional facility accompanied by two guards on the evening of August 9, 2019, before spanning 11 hours from 7:40pm to 6:40am the following morning.

The DoJ says that while the footage doesn't show his cell door, it would show anyone approaching or leaving it during the timeframe, informing its conclusion that no one entered or left it after Epstein was deposited there by the guards.

The investigation also found that Epstein did not blackmail powerful figures or keep a "client list", despite the rumour mill being fed by various photos of the paedophile and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell with a wide range of public figures, from Trump and Bill Clinton to Prince Andrew and Naomi Campbell.

A joint memo from the two bodies also confirmed that no further charges would be filed in the Epstein case.

A watchdog report in 2023 found that misconduct and prison guard negligence had enabled Epstein to kill himself in his jail cell following a previous attempt to take his own life that led to him being placed on suicide watch in the federal prison.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi previously promised to release extensive records linked to federal investigations into Epstein, but the outcome of the recent investigation said any further disclosure would not be "appropriate or warranted".
