Two people have been killed and at least 18 others have been injured after a truck ploughed into crowds at a busy outdoor market. Emergency services were scrambled to South Korea’s Bucheon city, in the Seoul metropolitan area, on Thursday, as the horror crash unfolded. 

The truck driver, reportedly a man in his 60s, is being questioned by police, a Bucheon police official said. Initial reports from Park Geum-cheon, an official at Bucheon’s fire station, suggest the truck initially reversed before driving forward for nearly 500 feet, hitting pedestrians.

'The truck was dragging people'

A witness has described the "really frightening" scenes as the truck crashed through the market, as per Japanese outlet NHK. 

They said: "There was a huge booming sound. The vehicle was careening forward, dragging along people. It happened in an instant and was really frightening."

How did the incident unfold?

A police official said the truck reversed 28 metres before accelerating towards the outdoor market.

The driver was rescued after being trapped in the vehicle. He drove into the pavement at around 10.55am local time on Thursday. 

According to the Korean news outlet Xinhua News, the man said the truck's brakes failed.

He had driven around 100 meters into the market before crashing into a storefront and coming to a stop.

Driver arrested

Police have arrested the driver and he is being questioned, the Yonhap News Agency said.

Truck left mangled and shattered

Photos from the scene showed the truck jammed into a storefront in a jumble of debris, including toppled boxes, clothing and broken signboards.

The front left side of the truck was mangled and its windows were shattered.

Eleven sustained serious injuries

Out of the 18 people injured in the crash, 11 sustained serious injuries. 

Officials have not said whether the injuries are life-threatening.
