Incredible scientific evidence could have washed up in Turkey showing the location of Noah's Ark in an area researchers believe suffered a "catastrophic event" around 5,000 years ago.

The biblical barge was famously constructed by Noah, according to the Bible, after God told him to rescue two of every animal species to save them from an apocalyptic flood the Almighty was sent to cleanse the world.

Now, an international team of scientists has discovered what appears to be a huge ship-shaped mound near Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey.

Remarkably, the huge geological structure bears an uncanny resemblance to the measurements given for the Ark in the Bible, and it's thought the site, known as the Durupinar Formation, could even contain the fossilised remains of the vessel.

A team has studied the 538-foot-long formation, and they have found evidence that the landlocked surrounding area was once underwater.

In the Bible, the Ark measurements were a "length of three hundred cubits" with a width of "fifty cubits" and a height of "thirty cubits", which would match the area of around 150 metres long covered by the formation near Mount Ararat.

Professor Dr Faruk Kaya, vice rector of Agri Ibrahim Cecen University, told the Jerusalem Post: "According to the initial results, it's believed there were human activities in this region since the Chalcolithic period.

"An essential outcome of the symposium is the decision to conduct more research in Cudi and Ararat, known as the Mesopotamian region."

Dr Kaya added that "our studies show that this region harboured life in that period and that, at some point, it was covered by water, which reinforces the possibility that a catastrophic event of great magnitude occurred".

According to the researcher's website, Noah's Ark Scans: "The narrative of Noah’s Ark is deeply ingrained in the religious texts of both Christianity and Islam, with references found in Genesis 8:4 of the Bible and Surah 11:44 of the Qur’an.

"In both texts, the story recounts a great deluge, a boat, and a landing in a mountainous region. Locals in the nearby village point to the Durupinar site, which they call Al-Judi, as a possible landing point of the ark."

It adds: "Perhaps most compellingly, the length of the Durupinar formation aligns perfectly with the dimensions of the ark as described in Genesis 6:15 of the Bible."
