Boxing Day travel chaos erupted as police officers swarmed an international airport. On December 26, as many were scheduled to travel, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was forced to close its terminal 1 departures level lobby.
The SFO wrote on X: "Terminal 1 Departures Level lobby is closed due to police activity. Please avoid the departures level of the domestic terminals. Departing passengers with no bags to check, drop off at International Terminal and use the security checkpoints there to get to your gates." US news outlet Kron4 reports police had launched a "suspicious package investigation".
The San Francisco airport said in its latest update: "The police activity at Terminal 1 is ongoing. Please avoid pick-ups and drop-offs in the domestic terminals due to traffic congestion, and use the International Terminal instead."
Passengers at the San Francisco International Airport are experiencing significant disruption, according to Kron4.
Citing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the news outlet said the SFO is experiencing more than 190 delayed flights.
The FAA also reported an average delay of approximately one and a half hour.
Moreover, an additional 20 flights have reportedly been cancelled.
