Passengers on a Ryanair flight were left terrified after severe turbulence hit the plane mid-air, forcing it to make an emergency landing in Germany. The flight from Berlin to Milan encountered violent thunderstorms as it crossed southern Germany, shaking the aircraft so hard that some people were reportedly thrown into the ceiling.

According to German outlet BILD, several passengers were not in their seats when the turbulence struck. One woman and her baby were said to be in the toilet at the time, while others claimed they hadn’t been warned to fasten their seatbelts.

One shaken traveller told BILD: “I’ve never been scared before - but at that moment, I thought the plane was going to break apart or roll over.”

The incident caused the flight crew to divert the aircraft to Memmingen, where emergency services were already waiting.

Photos shared on social media showed the Ryanair plane parked on the tarmac next to ambulances and fire trucks, with medics later seen assisting passengers inside the airport.

Nine people in total were injured during the ordeal. Police said three of them required hospital treatment, including a toddler who suffered bruises, a woman with a head injury, and a third passenger with back pain.

Others were treated at the scene by paramedics. There were 179 passengers and six crew members on board at the time.

However, trouble didn’t end after the flight touched down as passengers were reportedly kept on the plane for several hours.

Ryanair later issued a statement confirming that a replacement flight was being arranged to take passengers to their original destination in Milan.

The airline also apologised to those affected and warned of further possible delays across Germany due to severe weather.

The statement shared with the Express read: "FR8 from Berlin to Milan on June 4 diverted to Memmingen after experiencing some air turbulence. The captain called ahead for medical assistance and the aircraft landed normally. To get passengers to their final destination as quickly as possible, we arranged for alternative transport from Memmingen to Milan that night, as well as a replacement flight this morning.

"We sincerely apologise to passengers affected by this diversion.”

According to BILD, local authorities said a bus transfer was initially planned because aviation authorities had not immediately cleared new departures from Memmingen.

Severe storms battered the region that night, with strong winds damaging homes and ripping off roofs.

Germany’s weather service is currently investigating whether a small tornado may have caused the destruction in the area.
