Planes were allowed to fly again at 11.25 am (local time) from Italy's Aeroporti di Puglia airport in Brindisi which saw a temporary suspension of flights after flames were spotted on a Ryanair flight carrying 184 passengers. The
Boeing
had to abort its take off and was immediately evacuated. Initial reports say the fire was sparked from an issue with the engine, the Sun reported.
The flight was due to head to Turin at around 8.35 am when passengers noticed a "strong flame" from underneath the wing of the Boeing 737-800 during taxiing.
Passengers and the six crew were escorted off on an inflatable slide after "moments of fear", reported Correire Della Sera.
As firefighters rushed to site, the airport was closed. Flights in and out of the airport were temporarily suspended as the authorities investigated the cause of the fire.
“Flight FR8826 from Brindisi to Turin was delayed this morning after cabin crew observed fumes on the outside of the aircraft. Passengers were disembarked without incident and returned to the terminal by bus. We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for this delay," Ryanair said in its statement. The airline said a spare aircraft will take off later to get the passengers to Turin safely.
