The Russian rouble weakened against the US dollar yesterday, amid uncertainty over a peace deal in Ukraine, in the latest blow to the country's economy. The dollar now buys 82.88 roubles according to currency converters Wise, but fell to 83.1 yesterday.

The slump struck despite the rouble having surged 38% against the dollar so far this year, according to London Stock Exchange. If the rouble continues to weaken, that will likely impact Vladimir Putin's ability to wage war in Ukraine. Reacting to the slide, former Chief of the National Bank of Ukraine, Kyrylo Shevchenko wrote on X: "Rouble & Russian stocks CRASH as Ukraine peace talks collapse! Dollar hits 83.1 roubles, euro at 94.5. Moscow Exchange drops to 2,900. Gazprom -3.2%, Sberbank -1.5%, Aeroflot -3%+. Geopolitics rattle markets!"

The sudden fall in the value of the rouble comes as uncertainty grows over the prospect of a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.

Donald Trump's seven-point plan for peace was rubbished by President Zelensky yesterday, prompting the US President to suggest he shouldered some of the responsibility for the continuation of the war.

Zelensky said witheringly of Trump's plan, which includes Ukraine giving up sovereignty of Crimea and most of Kherson: "There is nothing to talk about. This violates our constitution. This is our territory, the territory of the people of Ukraine."

In response, Trump launched a brutal tirade on the war leader on Truth Social. He wrote: "It’s inflammatory statements like Zelenskyy’s that makes it so difficult to settle this war."

He added: "The situation for Ukraine is dire. He can have peace or, he can fight for another three years before losing the whole country.

"I have nothing to do with Russia, but have much to do with wanting to save, on average, five thousand Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week, who are dying for no reason whatsoever.

"The statement made by Zelenskyy today will do nothing but prolong the 'killing field,' and nobody wants that! We are very close to a Deal, but the man with 'no cards to play' should now, finally, GET IT DONE."

The US peace plan would also see Ukraine barred from joining NATO and see US sanctions on Russia lifted. Ukraine would get a slice of Kherson and unhindered access to the Dnipro river. Meanwhile, the US would control the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
