Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was severely injured in a car accident over the weekend. He was taken to a nearby trauma center where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg, Giuliani's head of security, Michael Ragusa, said.
The "freak accident" occurred in New Hampshire on Saturday night when his rental car was rear-ended, according to his spokesman, Michael Ragusa. The 81-year-old politician was rushed to the hospital with a broken vertebra and multiple cuts and bruises, primarily on his left arm and lower leg.
Ragusa explained that prior to the accident, Giuliani had stopped his car to assist a woman who was a victim of domestic violence. "Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident," he added.
Giuliani called 911 and stayed at the scene until police arrived to ensure the woman's safety. The accident happened after he got back into his car, which was then hit from behind at high speed.
Ragusa made it clear that the crash was not a targeted attack. It is still unclear why Giuliani was in New Hampshire at the time.
The father of two first gained prominence in the 1980s and 90s as a prosecutor in New York City before being elected mayor. He served two terms from 1994 to 2001 and also ran for president in 2008.
In his later career, Giuliani served as a close advisor to President Donald Trump and played a significant role in spreading conspiracy theories about ballot counters following Trump's loss in the 2020 election.
Subsequently, he was disbarred in New York and Washington, D.C., and declared bankruptcy after being held liable for $146 million for disseminating false information about Georgia election workers.
