THE Former President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested for alleged crimes against humanity but the leader was famous worldwide for his wild claims.
He was arrested when he landed at Manilas international airport on Tuesday on an ICC arrest warrant.
His reign of terror saw around 30,000 people murdered, with even the President claiming he killed several himself.
Duterte, 79, has previously been accused of sponsoring death squads and claimed he carried out extra-judicial killings.
The ICC has alleged Duterte committed mass killings while mayor of Davao from 2011 and up until 2019, when he withdrew the country from the organisation.
Despite this, while being arrested, the ex-President questioned the police saying, "What crimes [have] I committed? Prove to me now the legal basis for my being here."
Between 2016 and 2022, the then-President Duterte shocked the world with his bizarre admissions and statements.
Claiming to have personally killed criminals
Duterte confirmed that he shot three men dead while mayor of Davao in 2016.
At the time, he said: "I killed about three of them... I don't know how many bullets from my gun went inside their bodies. It happened and I cannot lie about it."
His shocking statement came after he told a group of business men that police should kill because "if I can do it why can't you."
The firebrand added: "And I'd go around in Davao with a motorcycle, with a big bike around, and I would just patrol the streets, looking for trouble. I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill."
Duterte even said he had thrown someone out of a helicopter and used it as a threat to people considering stealing aid after a typhoon in 2016.
Philippines' crackpot president Rodrigo Duterte orders citizens to disinfect coronavirus masks with PETROL if they can't get alcohol
The then-president said: "If you are corrupt, I will fetch you using a helicopter to Manila and I will throw you out."
He added: "I have done this before, why would I not do it again?"
Claimed he "cured" himself of being gay
Duterte made colourful remarks about his personal life too, saying he was formerly gay.
He told the Filipino community in Tokyo in 2018 that he sensed he was "a bit gay" while married to his ex-wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman.
Their marriage was annulled in 2000 and Duterte said he was "cured" after meeting his next partner Honeylet Avanceña.
He said: “I became a man again! So beautiful women cured me. I hated handsome men afterwards. I now prefer beautiful women.”
Compared himself to Hitler
He shockingly likened himself to Hitler in 2016 when saying he wanted to kill drug addicts during his brutal war on crime.
The then-president said: “Hitler massacred three million Jews … there’s three million drug addicts. There are.
"I’d be happy to slaughter them. At least if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have (me)."
His controversial words were slammed by the German government.
A foreign ministry spokesperson raged: “It is impossible to make any comparison to the unique atrocities of the Shoah and Holocaust."
He joked about rape
Duterte made several disgusting jokes about rape, which sparked outrage both domestically and internationally.
While running for president, he made shocking comments about the rape and murder of an Australian missionary during a 1989 hostage crisis in Davao City.
He said: “I was angry she was raped, yes that was one thing. But she was so beautiful, I think the mayor should have been first. What a waste."
Duterte later apologised and said: “There was no intention of disrespecting our women and those who have been victims of this horrible crime."
As mayor, he also made a horrific statement after a report that his city was experiencing a rise in sexual violence in 2018.
He said: "They said there are many rape cases in Davao. As long as there are many beautiful women, there will be more rape cases."
Threatened to declare war on Canada over rubbish
The leader was involved in a long-standing dispute with Canada over tonnes of waste shipped from the North American country to the Philippines in the early 2010s.
Over 100 containers of rubbish were shipped in batches between 2013 and 2014 and stayed in local ports which sparked protests.
He told the North American nation to take waste back and said: "I will declare war against them. I will advise Canada that your garbage is on the way. Prepare a grand reception.
“Your garbage is coming home.”
Claimed God told him to stop swearing
Duterte became known for his potty mouth after he called Pope Francis a "son of a bi*ch" and told Barack Obama to "go to hell".
The hardman then vowed he would never swear again after God allegedly spoke to him.
Duterte claimed he received a divine intervention during a flight to Japan and said: “A voice said that, you know, if you don’t stop, I will bring this plane down now.”
Encouraged citizens to kill drug addicts
His horror war of drugs even saw him encourage his own people to kill, when he spoke to a crowd of 500 people in 2016.
The firebrand said: "These sons of wh***s are destroying our children. I warn you, don’t go into that, even if you’re a policeman, because I will really kill you.
“If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.”
