Russian ammunition dump explodes in Khartsyzk

Ukraine's military is reported to have wiped out a major Russian ammunition depot in a spectacular attack. Powerful explosions and detonations erupted late on Wednesday night in the Russian-occupied city of Khartsyzk in the Donetsk region.

Dramatic video footage shot by local residents shows a massive blast, followed by a ball of intense flames and a heavy column of thick black smoke. Ukrainian military bloggers say the strike hit a former industrial storage facility, where the Russian army had been stockpiling weapons and ammunition.

OSINT Telegram channel KiberBoroshno wrote: "The area was marked as an ‘abandoned industrial warehouse for explosives,’ covered by a Tor air defence system, but it didn’t help.”

The attack appears to be part of a systematic campaign by Ukraine's army to deplete Russia's military resources and disrupt logistics.

Khartsyzk is some 50 kilometres from the nearest Ukrainian-controlled territory and holds strategic value for Putin's army.

The city is close to the Makiivka-Donetsk metropolitan area and has served as an important rear base for Russian military operations.

Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, it has hosted command posts, logistics centres, and ammunition depots for Putin's forces.

It comes on the same day it emerged that the commander of Russia's 8th Army has been killed in a Storm Shadow missile attack in Donetsk.

This is already the third time the city has been targeted in drone and missile attacks by Ukraine.

In January 2025, Ukrainian forces said they hit a Russian army command post in the city.

Back in 2022, another ammunition warehouse was destroyed following a successful aerial bombardment.

Ukraine also launched a drone attack on the Energia plant in Yelets, in the Russian region of Lipetsk.

The industrial site produces components for both ballistic and cruise missiles, such as guidance and correction systems.

Ukraine's General Staff confirmed it was behind the attack on Thursday. Production at the site has been halted, according to local reports.

Energia suffered damage earlier this year in May, when it came under aerial attack from UAVS.
