Donald Trump has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli leader hailed the US president's peacemaking efforts during a White House meeting on Monday (July 7).

Mr Netanyahu presented Mr Trump with a copy of a letter of nomination which he said had been sent to the Nobel committee. Israel's leader said: "He’s forging peace as we speak, one country and one region after the other." The call for the peace prize comes after Mr Netanyahu pressed Mr Trump and his predecessors to take military action against Iran's nuclear programme. Mr Trump ordered US forces to drop "bunker-buster" bombs and fire a barrage of Tomahawk missiles on three key Iranian nuclear sites in June.

The US president has made little secret of the fact he covets a Nobel Peace Prize and sees himself as a capable peacemaker. So what do you think? Vote in our poll and join the debate in the comments section. Can't see the poll below? Click here

Mr Trump told Mr Netanyahu as he handed the letter over: "Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful."

The president has hailed recent truces his administration has struck between India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and Israel and Iran.

Since its beginning in 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 105 times to 142 recipients, including individuals and organisations such as the Red Cross.

In 2024, the prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo for efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. Other winners include the European Union, former US presidents Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter as well as John Hume and David Trimble for their efforts to end the conflict in Northern Ireland.

The first recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize were Henry Dunant and Frédéric Passy. Dunant was founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Passy founded a number of peace societies.
