Donald Trump has announced that the first stage of a Gaza peace plan has been agreed between Hamas and Israel. Celebrations have occurred in the streets of both the strip and Tel Aviv following the announcement. If the plan is approved by Israel's government, it could see an end to the war, which was sparked by Hamas's October 7 attacks in 2023, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the entry of more aid into Gaza. Negotiations took place in Egypt, with Qatar, the US and Turkey also helping to broker talks.

The US president is known to want the Nobel Peace Prize. His predecessor, Barack Obama, won the accolade in 2009 for "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." So what do you think? Trump claims to have been imperative to deals between Azerbaijan and Armenia, India and Pakistan, and this latest pact between Israel and Hamas.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce on Friday who has received the medal.

Israel and Hamas’ agreement to the initial phases of a plan to end fighting in Gaza is a “moment of profound relief that will be felt around the world”, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

Responding to news that the warring parties have agreed to the “first phase” of Donald Trump’s peace plan, Sir Keir Starmer said: “I welcome the news that a deal has been reached on the first stage of President Trump’s peace plan for Gaza.

“This is a moment of profound relief that will be felt all around the world, but particularly for the hostages, their families, and for the civilian population of Gaza, who have all endured unimaginable suffering over the last two years."

The Prime Minister added: “I am grateful for the tireless diplomatic efforts of Egypt, Qatar, Turkiye and the United States, supported by our regional partners, in securing this crucial first step.

“This agreement must now be implemented in full, without delay, and accompanied by the immediate lifting of all restrictions on life-saving humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“We call on all parties to meet the commitments they have made, to end the war, and to build the foundations for a just and lasting end to the conflict and a sustainable path to a long-term peace. The UK will support these crucial immediate steps and the next stage of talks to ensure the full implementation of the peace plan.”
