Pictures of the new ‘world’s longest’ bridge have been released, with the structure costing a staggering NT$12.49 billion (estimated £295.3 million) to build. The Danjiang Bridge, currently under construction in Taiwan, is slated to become the world’s longest single-tower, cable-stayed bridge and is scheduled to open on May 12, 2026.
The bridge's main structure was recently completed with the final segment of steel decking, connecting the two sides of the Tamsui River estuary. Danjiang Bridge is an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge with its longest section spanning 450 metres. The cables fan out from a single 200-metre-tall concrete mast and are built to withstand extreme weather conditions and seismic activity.

The structure was designed to ease traffic congestion on small roads by connecting highways on either side of the Tamsui River. It is also hoped to reduce traffic on Guandu Bridge, which is located five kilometres upstream in New Taipei.
The new bridge is set to reduce journey time between Bali and Tamsui from both sides of the river by 15km (estimated 25 minutes).
"Danjiang Bridge is the world's longest single-tower, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge and is integral to the region's comprehensive infrastructure upgrading program," said Zaha Hadid Architects.
The studio’s goal was to create a bridge mast with a sculptural silhouette that is as slim as possible, minimising obstruction of sunset views.

Zaha Hadid Architects used 3D modelling and mapping to ensure the maintenance of safe passage for river vessels while also minimising blocking sunset views from popular viewpoints along the river.
"The single-mast design also reduces the structure's impact on the riverbed in line with stringent programs established to protect the estuary's ecosystem," said Zaha Hadid Architects.
With the main structure complete, the finishing touches will include laying asphalt on the road, installing lighting and conducting structural load tests.
The Danjiang Bridge will also feature pedestrian and cycle lanes when it opens for use next year.
Other projects recently completed by Zaha Hadid Architects include the 60,000-seat Xi'an International Football Centre in China and a multi-storey leisure complex in Hong Kong designed as a village.
