Tech 24

It's being called the most consequential courtroom drama Silicon Valley has ever produced. Elon Musk, the world's richest man, is squaring off against Sam Altman, the man who put artificial intelligence in everyone's pocket, in a federal courthouse in Oakland, California.

Watch moreMusk vs Altman: Beyond battle of egos, who gets final say on AI?

The case centres on OpenAI's founding in 2015 as a non-profit before it evolved into a commercial venture preparing for a potential IPO that could value it at up to $1 trillion. Musk, this week, took to the stand to say that the shift betrayed OpenAI's original charitable mission. OpenAI says he's a bitter ex-partner trying to kneecap a competitor.

But strip away the billionaire drama and a far bigger question emerges: when you promise to build powerful technology for the benefit of humanity – and that technology becomes worth a trillion dollars – does the promise still bind you?

We take a closer look in this edition of Tech 24.
