An explosion rocked Monaco on Monday, after a man reportedly left a backpack on a street. The horror blast occurred in Rue Reverend-Pere-Louis-Frolla in the major holiday hotspot at approximately 9pm local time. Three people have been injured, including two being seriously hurt, in the incident, officials said. The suspect, BFMTV reports, is "on the run".

Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti commented the incident on X, saying in a translated message: "The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that strikes Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilised." There were no immediate confirmation from authorities the incident was an attack.

'Red plan' activated

According to the police officials, the "red plan" has been activated, reports BFMTV. 

According to the website of the Principality of Monaco, the red plan is "a pre-established action strategy for a sudden event resulting in, or likely to result in, numerous casualties.

It allows for a gradual increase in resources depending on the number of victims."

Several emergency crews at the scene

Five vehicles and fourteen firefighters from the Alpes-Maritimes department swarmed Rue Reverend-Père-Louis-Folla following reports of an incident.

The emergency crewws arrived on the scene around 10.15pm local time (9.15pm BST), according to the Alpes-Maritimes departmental fire and rescue service.

Three people 'injured in explosion'

Three people have been injured, a first official report on the incident said. 

Two of the casualties are said to have been seriously hurt in the incident.

Authorities have yet to issue a statement on the incident. 

French broadcaster BFMTV has reported casualties are considered "likely" following the reported blast.

Mayor of Nice issues first statement

The mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti, has issued a brief statement following reports of an explosion in Monaco. 

It read: "The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that strikes Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilised."

There was no immediate confirmation from authority the incident was an attack.
