For Mississippi homeowners, a sudden cloud of winged insects can be more than a seasonal annoyance. It can be the first visible sign of a termite colony that has been developing quietly for years. Mississippi State University Extension Service says eastern subterranean termites normally swarm during spring, but along the Gulf Coast their activity can begin as early as late January or February and continue into May or even early June in northern Mississippi. In 2026, the university also reported heavy termite swarms in southern Mississippi, particularly involving invasive Formosan subterranean termites. The timing itself was not considered unusually early; rather, the size of some swarms drew attention. Meanwhile, MSU Extension estimates that treating an average-sized Mississippi home for termites can cost around $1,200 to $1,750, depending on its construction, size and treatment method. The university's guidance makes one point clear: spotting termites is a reason to investigate, not simply wait for the insects to disappear.Meet Mississippi’s subterranean termites, which can swarm from winter into early summerThe termites most commonly discussed in Mississippi's spring swarm warnin...
