Visibily shaken children were spotted being pulled away from the school from their teary eyed parents.

The scene was one of distress with some children being carried out.

Parents were told they could be reunited with their children in the school's basement, said Erin, a mum who only wished to use her first name.

US President Donald Trump says he has been "fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota".

Taking to Truth Social he added that "the FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!"

There is "no active threat" in the area now, a city official says, and the gunman has been "contained".

In a major update the official City of Minneapolis account on X said: "There is an active police situation at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th St.

"There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained."

Locals are being warned to "stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims".

The area affected is W 54th Street between Lyndale and Nicollet Avenue.

Governor Tim Walz has confirmed the shooting took place at Annunciation Catholic School.

He says he has been briefed and is "praying" for this kids and parents caught up in the shooting.

Taking to X he said: "I’ve been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and will continue to provide updates as we get more information.

"The BCA and State Patrol are on scene. I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence."
