Indian-Americans are really making a riot in American politics this year. While the wave may have begun with Zohran Mamdani becoming the mayor of New York City, it has been raised with Pranita Venkatesh becoming the mayor of San Carlos.

Venkatesh has also set a record as the second mayor in America with Indian-origin roots, following Mamdani.

On December 8, 2025, Venkatesh was sworn in as the Mayor of San Carlos, California. The city hosts a population of 28,000 and is in San Mateo County, California. Located near a major hub like Silicon Valley, it is also known as the "City of the Gold Life." Venkatesh has become one of the city's youngest mayors and one of its first leaders of South Asian heritage.

Who is Pranita Venkatesh?

Venkatesh, is a member of the Indo-Fiji diaspora and was unanimously sworn in as the mayor of the city. Born to Indian parents in Fiji, she moved to California with her family at the age of four. She and her husband moved to San Carlos in 2009 with their two children and have lived there for the past 15 years. Before this, she was a child psychologist in East Palo Alto and a buyer at Macy's.Venkatesh holds a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame de Namur and a master's degree in early childhood and clinical psychology. As per her LinkedIn, she is the director of a Montessori preschool, Paragon Montessori in San Carlos.

She was first elected to the San Carlos City Council in 2022 on an endorsement from the San Mateo Democratic Party. Before that, she had served on the city's Economic Development Advisory Commission for three years.

What are Pranita Venkatesh's plans for San Carlos?

In a conversation with Scoot Scoop, a local news outlet, Venkatesh said, "My priorities for San Carlos are public safety, childcare, economic stability, infrastructure, and affordable housing".After her swearing-in ceremony, she shared in public statements that she aims to "bridge community needs with effective municipal governance."According to the fijivillage.com, Venkatesh's election reflects the "vibrant diversity in the city and shows what is possible when one aims high and steps forward to serve."The Hindy American Foundation took to X, to celebrate the Indian-origin mayor's election, writing, "We congratulate Pranita Venkatesh, a Fijian Hindu American and Indian origin child psychologist, on being unanimously sworn in as Mayor of San Carlos, CA, one of the city’s youngest mayors and a proud voice for representation in civic leadership."

Now, it remains to be seen how she impacts the city and its life while also balancing her own culture and heritage.
