A French court on Monday convicted Marine Le Pen of embezzlement and barred her from seeking public office for five years, dealing a hammer blow to the far-right leader’s presidential hopes and upending the 2027 race for the Élysée palace. Le Pen has vowed to fight the conviction, which she claims was politically motivated.

US President Donald Trump announced plans for sweeping tariffs Wednesday, saying the US has been “looted, pillaged, raped and plundered” by other nations. He lodged a 10 percent tariff on most goods imported to the US, but slapped much higher levies on friends and foes alike, including 20 percent for the EU, fuelling a global trade war that could stoke inflation and stall growth.

More than 3,300 dead in Myanmar earthquake

Following the powerful earthquake on March 28, Myanmar authorities reported almost 3,500 deaths and more than 200 missing on Saturday. The earthquake, which flattened buildings and destroyed infrastructure across the country, also injured 4,671 people. The country was already weakened after years of civil war

SpaceX launches first manned space mission to fly over the poles

SpaceX launched the first human spaceflight directly over Earth's polar regions on Monday, sending four private astronauts on a pioneering mission to conduct experiments ranging from taking the first X-ray in space to testing mushroom growth in microgravity.  It's hoped that the research will support future extended space missions to Mars.

Paris St Germain won their 13th Ligue 1 title overall on Saturday after a 1-0 win over Angers. The record-extending win highlights the extent to which they have dominated domestically since being taken over by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011.

A new volcano erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland on Wednesday, spewing fountains of red-hot lava into the air shortly after authorities evacuated the nearby town of Grindavik. The eruption was the fifth in six months on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Thousands of people gathered across the US on Saturday to rally for one of the the largest single day of protest against President Donald Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk. The demonstrations were organised in response to Trump's raft of executive orders on tariffs, immigration, education, free speech and more. Rallies also took place in several European cities.
