Emergency alerts issued en masse by State Meteorological Agency

Malaga City Council has deployed an unprecedented emergency response to rising floodwaters in the region, with floodwaters reaching “several meters in height”, as per local reports.

The usually picturesque holiday favourite for Brits was thrown into chaos after heavy rains lashed the tourism region in southern Spain. The national weather bureau has issued a red alert for “extraordinary danger” across 27 municipalities in the Malaga region.

In addition to the red alert for Sol and Guadalhorce, the State Meteorological Agency has also issued an orange alert for rain in the regions of Ronda, Antequera and Axarquía. Orange warnings are now in effect along the Granada coast and the Almería regions of Valle del Almanzora and Los Vélez.

Yellow warnings remain in place for the coast, Andévalo and Condado de Huelva, the entire province of Cádiz, and the Antequera area in Málaga, where a coastal alert is also in place.

Emergency rescue service warns residents, tourists to flee to top floors

Officers from the Spanish emergency and disaster response unit Civil Protection are now telling residents in the family friendly tourist town of Santa Amalia to flee to the highest floors of their homes and buildings as floodwaters continue to inundate Malaga.

The City of Malaga mayor's office issued a public statement to amplify the critical safety notice to the broader public as Civil Protection officers continue to use "the loudspeakers on their vehicles" as a warning beacon to advise anyone still in the area to "go up to the upper floors of their homes as a precaution".

A City of Malaga spokesperson added that those wishing to flee the rapidly rising waters can find an emergency shelter at the El Romeral residents' association in Alhaurin de la Torre.

The spokesperson added that this is "the nearest safe area" as water levels continue to rise.

Algunos de ellos están desalojando las casas y desplazándose a hogares de familiares. También van a tener la posibilidad de alojarse en la asociación de vecinos El Romeral, en Alhaurín de la Torre, la zona segura más cercana.
