The United States carried out a lightning military strike on Venezuela early Saturday, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and spiriting them out of the country. American officials say the pair will face narco-terrorism charges in US courts.

"This was one of ‍the most stunning, effective ​and powerful displays of American military might and competence ‌in American history," Trump told reporters ‍at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

He said US air, land and sea forces were used in ‍the operation.

President Donald Trump said the United States will "run" Venezuela until a political transition can occur, after the spectacular US military operation to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro from the country.

"We're going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition," Trump told a press conference, adding that US forces were ready to conduct a second, "much bigger" wave of strikes if necessary.
