A man is threatening to blow up a building in Madrid city centre. The individual, who is covered in blood, is on the third floor of the buiding on Gran Via, in the middle of the Spanish capital city.
Emergency services have responded to the reported bomb threat on Madrid’s busy Gran Via.
The incident is taking place in a multi-story building in a heavily frequented tourist area.
The suspect is believed to be on the third floor and is refusing to leave. Police units and ambulances have been sent to the scene, and specialist negotiators are engaged in attempts to resolve the situation.
Authorities have removed the cordon following the arrest of the man involved in the Gran Vía incident.
The central Madrid area was thrown into disruption, with nearby streets closed and a metro station temporarily shut. A negotiator remained on site during the standoff, and the individual was safely detained.
According to ABC Spain, the man arrested is a 40-year-old man with a history of mental illness has been arrested in central Madrid after threatening to detonate two butane gas cylinders on Gran Vía.
The incident began around 5pm at a building on Montera Street, when the man shouted to passersby.
He said: “I’m going to blow up the gas cylinders."
He reportedly threw one cylinder while holding the other.
Police have detained a man in central Madrid after he barricaded himself inside a third-floor apartment and threatened to blow up the building with butane gas canisters.
The suspect, reportedly with blood on his hands, prompted a large emergency response.
A negotiator was dispatched as officers sealed off the area, halting traffic and setting up a security cordon.
The man has been removed from the apartment and taken into custody.
In a social media post, a witness said: "I don't know what is going on, but Gran Via metro stop appears to be closed and police have cordoned off the area."
