German police are set to begin fresh searches in Portugal on Tuesday as part of their ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann after apparently receiving new information. Madeleine was just three years old when she vanished in 2007 from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents dined nearby.

The latest search will focus on trenches near the McCanns’ former holiday accommodation and involve radar technology capable of detecting buried objects, according to the Sun. About 30 German officers, including forensic specialists, are expected to be involved, with Portuguese police providing on-the-ground support. Speculation is rising that the searches have been triggered by significant new information, with reports suggesting a tipster had sent images to German police of the Praia sites where they claim Madeleine may be buried.

Evidence will be handed over to German police

Evidence uncovered by Portuguese officers during the operation will be handed over to the German federal police for analysis.

The last significant search in Portugal took place in 2023 at the Barragem do Arade reservoir, some 30 miles from Praia da Luz, an area Brueckner is known to have visited.

British police were also granted access to nearby scrubland back in 2014.

Last month, Madeleine’s parents marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, pledging in a statement: “Our determination to 'leave no stone unturned' is unwavering.”

Efforts to focus on cottage once occupied by Christian Brueckner

Authorities began sealing off dirt roads and erecting tents on Monday near Atalaia, close to a cottage once occupied by Christian Brueckner, the man German prosecutors suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance.

Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for the rape of an elderly woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.

He has denied any involvement in the McCann case.

The upcoming searches, scheduled to take place from June 2 to 6, are being conducted under a European investigation order in the Lagos municipality.
