King Charles III used his Christmas Day address to reflect on a year marked by personal health challenges. Speaking from an ornate chapel in a former London hospital, the 76-year-old monarch thanked doctors and nurses who cared for him and his daughter-in-law, Kate, during their cancer treatments this year.
Charles revealed in February that he had been diagnosed with cancer following tests after a prostate procedure. Kate, the Princess of Wales, underwent preventative chemotherapy, concluding her treatment in September.
"From a personal point of view, I offer special heartfelt thanks to the selfless doctors and nurses who supported me and other members of my family through the uncertainties and anxieties of illness," he said.
The speech included footage of Charles visiting a cancer treatment centre in April and one of Kate’s early engagements upon resuming royal duties. He also expressed gratitude for public sympathy and encouragement during their recovery.

The king also addressed the riots that erupted in northern England this summer after the murder of three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed event. "Diversity of culture, ethnicity, and faith provides strength, not weakness," he said, praising communities that came together to rebuild relationships and trust.
Additionally, Charles reflected on ongoing global conflicts, acknowledging the suffering caused by wars in the Middle East, central Europe, and Africa. "On this Christmas day, we cannot help but think of those for whom the devastating effects of conflict pose a daily threat to life and livelihood," he said.
The royal family celebrated Christmas with a church service at Sandringham early in the day.
