Protests in Nairobi descend into chaos and violence (Image: X social media)

Six people are reported to have been killed after police in Nairobi opened fire on protesters.

At least four people were fatally shot in the Ngong area and another two killed in the Kangemi area.

More gunfire has been heard in the Githurai and Kiambu areas of the capital, as tensions remain high.

Looting and fires have also broken out as the violence shows no sign of abating.

What are protests about?

The demonstrations mark the 35th anniversary of the historic Saba Saba (7 July 1990) protests that launched Kenya's push for multiparty democracy.

All major roads into central Nairobi were blocked off by security forces ahead of the protests.

Hospital says it has received 2 dead bodies

Dr Aron Sikuku told the BBC that two bodies were taken to the Eagle Nursing Home in Kangemi, where he workd.

They later died from their injuries.

He said hundreds of protesters had gathered outside his hospital demanding to take away the bodies.
