A man stabbed 14 people during a frenzied attack at a rubber factory on Boxing Day. At least eight are reported to have been rushed to the hospital to receive treatment for their wounds.

The horrific incident unfolded at 4.30pm local time in the Japanese city of Mishima. "Fourteen people are subject to transportation by emergency services," Tomoharu Sugiyama, a firefighting department official, told AFP.

He also confirmed that a "spray-like liquid" had been used in the attack at the Yokohama Rubber Mishima Plant.

The attacker was detained at the premises and is now in police custody, as detectives carry out an investigation.

The knife-wielding man was wearing a gas mask during his frenzied attack, according to local media.

Officers are carrying out tests on the spray to try and identify the liquid inside.

The area has been cordonned off as detectives and forsenic teams comb the factory for further clues.

The Yokohama Rubber Mishima Plant is a major production site in the region.
