Ukraine's special forces say they have assassinated a Russian commander accused of committing war crimes in the Kyiv region in 2022. The GUR released a video showing the dramatic moment Lt Col Veniamin Mazzherin's car exploded as he was driving along a road in Russia's Kemerovo region on Saturday, October 25.

Images show the OMON commander behind the wheel of his white car, before a huge explosion rips through the vehicle, engulfing it in flames. The attack was carried out deep inside Russia, in southwest Siberia, over 1,8000 miles from the capital Moscow. The senior officer, born in 1980, served in the OMON special unit “Obereg,” part of Russia’s National Guard in the Kemerovo region.

His unit is one of several implicated in killing civilians in the Kyiv region during the initial phase of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

During that period, Putin's forces occupied several towns in the province, including Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel, as part of their failed attempt to seize Ukraine's capital.

After they retreated in late March 2022, evidence of systematic war crimes against civilians was unearthed by investigators.

Over 1,000 civilian bodies were recovered in Kyiv Oblast from this period, with approximately 450 found in Bucha alone.

Many victims showed signs of summary execution, torture, and deliberate killing. Bodies were found bound, shot at close range, or showing evidence of severe physical abuse.

The GUR said it had identified members of "Obereg" by name in April 2022 and developed plans for what it termed the "just punishment" of individuals on the list.

Ukraine's Office of the Prosecutor General has also opened criminal proceedings against servicemen from the unit based on collected evidence and eyewitness testimony

In a statement on its Telegram channel, the GUR intelligence agency said: "Just punishment: a Russian OMON lieutenant colonel involved in war crimes in the Kyiv region was eliminated in Russia.

"On October 25, 2025, a car exploded in the Kemerovo region of the aggressor state Russia, with the war criminal Mazzherin Veniamin Vladimirovich behind the wheel.

"The Ministry of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reminds — for every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people, there will be just retribution."
