Pakistan’s state broadcaster said on Saturday that its forces were carrying out retaliatory strikes after Indian missiles hit three air bases on its territory. It gave no specifics on targets, and the locations under attack in India were not identified. The report said: “Multiple locations in India are being targeted in the retaliatory attacks."

A spokesman for Pakistan’s military claimed most of the Indian missiles had been intercepted. The exchange marks a sharp escalation in tensions sparked by a gun massacre last month, which India alleges was carried out by Pakistani-backed militants. Independent confirmation of the claims made by either side was not immediately possible.

Further military escalation 'poses a serious threat to regional stability', warns Lammy

David Lammy has joined G7 ministers in calling for an "immediate de-escalation" between India and Pakistan.

A statement issued on Saturday morning said: "We, the G7 foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America and the high representative of the European Union, strongly condemn the egregious terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan.

"Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability.

"We are deeply concerned for the safety of civilians on both sides.

"We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful outcome.

"We continue to monitor events closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution."

Further escalation 'will be met with firm response', claims ex-Indian foreign secretary

India’s former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has accused Pakistan of missing multiple chances to de-escalate tensions in recent weeks.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said: “Pakistan has really upped the ante,” and warned that it now bore the responsibility to step back.

He added: “That has really deprived the opportunity for going back to a more peaceful situation.”

Mr Shringla also said any further escalation by Pakistan would be met with a “firm response” from India.

Accusations fly as nuclear-armed nations square off

India’s missile and bomb strikes on targets in Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir have sharply escalated tensions between the two nuclear-armed states, with Islamabad denouncing the move as an “act of war".

Conflicting narratives have emerged from both governments, with few verifiable details released about the scope or results of the attacks.

The Soufan Center warned that the online space has been “flooded with disinformation, false claims, and manipulated photos and videos,” further clouding the truth.

It said the information war is being driven by both sides’ “commitment to save face” amid heightened nationalistic rhetoric.

While independent verification remains elusive due to active fighting, fragments of the broader picture are emerging from official statements and satellite data.

What happened overnight?

India has said it targeted Pakistani military bases after Islamabad fired several high-speed missiles at multiple Indian air bases in the country’s Punjab state early Saturday.

Pakistan earlier said it intercepted most missiles targeting three air bases and that retaliatory strikes on India were underway.

Indian Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, at a news conference in New Delhi, said Pakistan also targeted health facilities and schools at its three air bases in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

She said: “Befitting reply has been given to Pakistani actions."

'We'll stop if they do,' says Pakistan's foreign minister

Pakistan’s foreign minister said Saturday his country would consider de-escalation if India stopped further attacks. This came after India said it was committed to non-escalation if Pakistan reciprocated.

The countries traded strikes on Saturday, the latest escalation in a conflict triggered by a massacre last month that India blames on Pakistan.

Ishaq Dar, the Pakistani foreign minister, still warned that if India launched any strikes, “our response will follow.”

Dar told Pakistan’s Geo News that he also conveyed this message to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio when he contacted him after speaking to New Delhi two hours ago.

He said: “We responded because our patience had reached its limit. If they stop here, we will also consider stopping."

Pakistan's claim to have destroyed Indian air defence system 'fake'

A spokesman for the Indian air force, Wing Commander Jaideep Singh, denied the claims made by Pakistan that it had destroyed an S-400 air defence system in Adampur, Punjab, using hypersonic missiles.

He said: “Its fake. A fact-check will be up soon by the Press Information Bureau."

Pakistan earlier said one of it air force JF-17 Thunder aircraft launched hypersonic missiles and had destroyed the site.

There was no way to independently verify the attack.

Islamabad rocked by explosions in horror scenes

Pakistan's capital city has been rocked by huge explosions, with flames filling the night sky. Several people have taken to social media to share images of huge bright orange filling the skies of Islamabad.

Footage posted online shows flames and smoke rising near the Margalla Hills and Chaklala area of Rawalpindi, close to military installations. At least three blasts were reported across Islamabad, with separate reports of an explosion in Lahore earlier in the evening.

Reports on social media claim drones were involved, with some suggesting they were brought down by Pakistani forces. The Pakistani military has not officially commented.

Several Pakistani sources reported that military sites in Lahore and Islamabad were the intended targets, with reports suggesting India may be stepping up its military operations following a terror attack last month that killed several Hindu tourists.

Pakistan vows 'revenge'

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar warned his country would take “revenge” after it “exhibited a lot of patience so far”.

He told Geo News: “There is a threshold which we cannot go beyond, especially when it comes to hypocrisy and double standards.

“The action that the Pakistan civil military leadership has taken is proportionate.

“Many more actions can be taken, and we are ready for that, but this is minimum action being taken just now which will be continued for a while.”
