India: Smoke rises from plane crash near Ahmedabad Airport

An Air India plane crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat. It is believed the plane was bound for London Gatwick. There have been conflicting reports on the number of passengers the plane was carrying when it crashed; however, police have said at least 242 people were on board.

Air India releases statement

Air India has released a short statement to local media. The airline said: "Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details."

Air India flight was carrying 290 passengers

The Air India flight bound for the UK was carrying around 290 passengers, local media has reported.

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner can carry around 300 passengers. 

Officials have not yet released any information on passenger numbers and nationalities.
