Considered one of the world's largest producers and consumers of tobacco, Indonesia is seeing a devastating scourge amongst its youth: some 40 percent of teenagers aged 13 to 15 smoke, and one in five smokers today lit their first cigarette before the age of 10.
In Indonesia, tobacco is everywhere. It is sold by the stick, with no age restrictions and is aggressively marketed to young people – even sponsoring music festivals.
In 2024, new laws were passed to limit advertising and restrict access to cigarettes, but enforcement remains weak. The health ministry is struggling to combat the powerful tobacco lobby. Major tobacco companies fund schools and social programmes, reinforcing their acceptance among the population.
