From quaint seaside cottages in Cornwall to high rise city flats in Glasgow - not all Airbnb listings are created equal. Holidaymakers opting for an Airbnb accommodation may have at times had their expectations exceeded but sadly, just as often, have been left thoroughly disappointed by their experience.
Now a travel expert from Ski Vertigo has discussed how “thoughtful extras and seamless check-ins” help to provide an unforgettable Airbnb experience but warned that “others fell short, despite looking perfect online”. According to the expert, there are a number of factors to be aware of prior to arriving at your Airbnb to help you stay ahead of the game.

The expert added that “over time, patterns began to emerge” and shared their vital tips to help maximise your stay with the most reliable strategies for identifying top-quality Airbnbs before you even book.
According to the expert, consistency when it comes to recent 5-star reviews is a big indicator as to what you may be dealing with and that a “high average rating alone isn’t enough”.
They said: “It’s crucial to check the most recent reviews for patterns in guest experiences as I once booked a flat in Leeds that had an impressive 4.9 overall, but recent reviews mentioned loud construction noise and slow communication - issues I later experienced myself.
“Properties with long-standing high ratings and frequent compliments about cleanliness, comfort, and host responsiveness tend to offer the best stays.”
The next tip shared by the expert came down to location, adding how it's imperative to “verify the location beyond the map pin”.
The expert explained: “Airbnb only shows an approximate location before you book but I always cross-check the map with Google Street View and search the neighbourhood name to see what’s nearby.”
The expert further discussed how they avoided disaster on a recent trip to Bath. When booking on Airbnb, reviews revealed its location was far from local amenities and sat atop a steep hill.

“Small details like this can impact the comfort of your stay, especially if you’re travelling without a car,” added the expert.
Next, the Airbnb tip guide went to discuss the accommodation's kitchen area, with the expert strongly advising to closely “inspect the kitchen photos carefully”.
“If you plan to self-cater, don’t assume all ‘kitchens’ are fully equipped as some listings may use the term loosely, even if the space only includes a kettle and microwave,” said the expert.
“I’ve learned to zoom in on photos to spot the oven, hob, cookware and utensils”.
The expert added how one of their favourite Airbnbs in the Peak District left a strong impression as it “included coffee, spices, and even a loaf of fresh bread on arrival - details that made it feel more like home”.
Cleanliness and check-in comments was next on the important tips for Airbnb bookings as many photos “can be misleading, but recent guest feedback usually isn’t”.
“I now pay close attention to reviews mentioning key handovers, late check-in issues, or anything that suggests poor communication,” added the expert.
Finally, asking questions prior to booking the Airbnb accommodation was another vital tip as “even well-reviewed listings can leave out important details”.
The expert added: “If anything is unclear, I always send a quick message to the host as their response time and tone often indicate what sort of experience you can expect.”
