A travel expert says a city in South Africa is an ideal alternative winter sun destination — and it's not Cape Town. Instead, Will Sarson, from UK-based cruise and tour operator Riviera Travel, recommends a trip to Johannesburg.
The city is South Africa’s biggest with a population of more than 5.5 million people and offers a “unique and meaningful escape”, according to Mr Sarson. He said Johannesburg’s combination of warm weather, rich history and culture makes it a good option for those seeking a more unusual winter getaway. Johannesburg, located in the northeastern province of Gauteng, is approximately an 11-hour direct flight from London.
Speaking about what the city has to offer, Mr Sarson identified the Apartheid Museum as a “must” visit.
He continued: “Beyond its history, Johannesburg boasts creativity and charm. Explore the Maboneng Precinct, with its street art and trendy cafes, or visit The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nearby.
“With its sunny climate and mix of culture, history, and adventure, Johannesburg is a rewarding alternative to the usual winter sun hotspots.”
Summer in South Africa is between December and February, with Johannesburg averaging daily maximum temperatures of around 25C. Temperatures are similar in spring from September to November.
British Airways and American Airlines are among the airlines that fly direct from London to Johannesburg. According to the flight comparison website Skyscanner, flights from London to the city are currently cheapest in December.
Although not one of South Africa’s capital cities, it is regarded as the nation's financial hub.
Johannesburg, which started as a mining town, is said to generate 16% of South Africa’s GDP and employ 12% of its workforce.
It is also a major transport hub, making it ideal for visitors to travel to other parts of South Africa or other countries.
If safaris are your thing, Johannesburg is also a popular base for anyone wanting to experience South Africa’s stunning wildlife.
The city offers good access to the wider Gauteng area and Pretoria in particular.
Other off-the-beaten-path winter sun destinations recommended by Mr Sarson included Phillips Island, Australia, Jodhpur, India and Colombo, Sri Lanka.
