In an interview with FRANCE 24, Kim Aris, the son of Myanmar's imprisoned former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, expressed grave concern for his mother's health. Suu Kyi, 80, has been jailed since the military overthrew her government in 2021 and is serving a 27-year sentence. "Her health is deteriorating. Her heart condition is getting worse," Aris said, adding: "I can only hope that she will survive. All I want is for her to be moved to house arrest and to be getting the care that she needs."

Speaking to FRANCE 24 from London, Aris explained that he does not know his mother's exact location and has had no communication from her in over two years.

Aris called the junta in Myanmar "essentially a terrorist organisation" and urged the international community not to legitimise the upcoming December 28 elections.

With Myanmar still mired in a devastating civil war, Aris said that the country's resistance forces were "doing an amazing job without any help from the outside world."

"With a little bit of help from the outside world, all this needless suffering could have ended a long time ago," he continued. "But if people started helping now, we can bring an end to the suffering sooner rather than later."

Despite the dire situation in Myanmar, Aris appeared hopeful, saying: "I truly believe that Burma will return to democracy."
