Huge Canary Islands change as Lanzarote only wants 'certain kinds of tourists'

A popular island in the Canaries has shared the exact type of tourist it wants to attract. A campaign has been launched in Lanzarote to make visitors aware that they must show appreciation and respect for the island.

The initiative, which is led by the islands council (Cabildo) and managed by SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, is designed to impact every sector of tourism. Not only does it target tourists, but also local residents and business owners. President of the Lanzarote Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, said he wants people to both enjoy and respect the island.

As reported by the Mirror, he said: "We are sending a very clear message: Lanzarote doesn't want just any tourist. But rather those who love and enjoy the island, who respect its uniqueness and contribute to its preservation."

He added: "We are creating a globally unique model of ethical and responsible tourism. The aim is for visitors to understand, even before they land here, that they are entering a delicate and beautiful territory that needs to be protected."

Hector Fernandez, CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, said: "This campaign isn't just for tourists, it's also aimed at our local population.

"The message will be integrated into our work with airlines and tour operators to reshape how tourism is viewed on the island. It's a chance to change the entire paradigm of Lanzarote as a destination."

The campaign is being developed by sustainability consultant CARSA. Director of Innovation Antonio Collado said the approach will be inclusive and participatory.

He explained: "We’re not just launching a campaign; we’re building a long-term strategy for responsible tourism that reflects the needs of the island and its people."

Over 15 million people visited the Canary Islands in 2024, which is a 10% increase from the year before. This has sparked fury among local residents who fear overtourism is damaging their home.

Locals argue that tourists are causing a surge in house prices and damaging the local identity of the Canary Islands. There have been a number of protests across Spain in recent times, including when an orange flare was launched into the reception area of a hotel just last month.

The Foreign Office has warned Brits that there is a "risk of unrest or violence" in Spain this summer. They are advising tourists to follow the advice of local authorities and react quickly if there are any signs of violence.

The Foreign Office said: "Demonstrations, political gatherings or marches can take place with little or no warning, particularly in cities. Follow the advice of police and local authorities.

"While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence. If you’re near areas where demonstrations are taking place, be aware of what is happening around you and move away if there are signs of disorder."
