Horror in Spain as 'man kills elderly mum by throwing her out of window'

A 54-year-old man has been accused of killing his elderly mother after throwing her out of an apartment window in a residential neighbourhood in Catalonia, Spain. The woman, named locally as Neus, died after being found lying in the street outside the apartment block in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, near Barcelona, last week.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, rushed to the scene before transferring her to the nearby Bellvitage Hospital, where she was deemed to be in a critical condition, but she later succumbed due to the seriousness of her injuries. Initially, police were working on three hypotheses: that she fell on her own, that someone pushed her, or that she took her own life. However, the victim’s son - who has been described as "unstable" by someone close to the woman - was arrested on Wednesday (November 19), with L'Hospitalet Municipal Police now investigating the incident as a case of domestic violence.

According to local media, the incident occurred around 1am on Tuesday (November 18), after the woman plunged from their apartment balcony.

The L'Hospitalet City Council has called for a minute of silence to be held at 8pm last Wednesday in front of the town hall to condemn the act and express its condolences to her family and friends, reported El Dia de Córdoba. The mayor of L'Hospitalet, David Quirós, along with several members of the council, reportedly attended the event, according to a statement released by the city council. Additionally, the council declared 24 hours of mourning, commencing from the time of the gathering.

During the mourning period, the flags of the City Hall were flown at half-mast and all official events organised by the council were suspended.

Neighbours have claimed Neus had previously warned that her son was dangerous and wanted to kill her.

“He would shout, lean out the window and start insulting people he did not know," a lifelong friend of Neus, Lourdes, told local media.

Police had been called to the property in northern Spain on a separate occasion, according to The Olive Press, but no arrests were made at that time.
