A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his twin daughters. The 11-year-old girls died after allegedly having their throats slit while at home.

Police were called to the family's apartment at around 4.30am on Sunday morning (April 19). They arrived to find the bodies of the girls on the floor of their bedroom.

A knife was found nearby before their 45-year-old father, who was reportedly sitting beside the bodies. He was arrested at the scene. Forensic examiners believe the twins were smothered before having their throats cut.

According to the Hindustan Times, the girls lived with their father in one section of the apartment in Kidwai Nagar, Kanpur, India. Meanwhile, their six-year-old brother lived with their mother in a separate part of the flat.

DCP (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary confirmed the arrest on Sunday. He added: "We received a call on 112 at around 4.30am from the accused himself."

Local media reports suggest the girls were found on the floor beside their unused bed.
