Police in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada, have arrested a woman following the death of a newborn baby found in a bus shelter on Monday morning.
The baby was discovered in a shelter on Chambly Road near Briggs Street at around 6:30am, according to the Service de police de l'agglomération (SPAL) de Longueuil. Paramedics from the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie reported that the infant was found naked, very cold, and still attached to the placenta. Despite resuscitation attempts at the scene and in transit, the baby tragically died at the hospital.

At a press conference, SPAL spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre said officers arrested a 33-year-old woman late Monday morning. Investigators are currently meeting with her and evaluating her mental and physical health.
Pierre declined to confirm whether the woman is the baby’s mother but said police could potentially pursue a charge of infanticide.
The police set up a command post at the scene and urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation was underway. As of 8am, traffic on Briggs Street eastbound and Chambly Road northbound was closed.
The incident shocked the local community. Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier described the case as “deeply disturbing” and noted its similarities to a recent incident in the city, though she stressed the events are not connected.
Earlier this month, another newborn was discovered on the doorstep of a home on Bourgeoys Street, swaddled in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached.
Police released footage showing a person carrying the baby in an effort to identify those involved. That infant survived, highlighting the tragic difference in outcomes between the two cases.
Mayor Fournier said the city will continue to monitor developments closely. She added that the woman being questioned is receiving “the physical and psychological support they need in this extremely vulnerable situation.”
Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward as they work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the newborn.
