A girl was found dead in a pond after allegedly being gang raped while on her way to the shop. Police have confirmed two suspects have been arrested following the reported attack.

It's reported the girl, 12, went to buy food from a shop near her home on Saturday evening (July 4). However, she did not return home and her parents reported her missing to police. Local officers launched an immediate search before her body, packed inside a sack, was found in a pond on Sunday morning. The girl's parents told the force that four people had taken her prior to her death.

As reported by The Star, the girl was found dead after allegedly being gang raped in the city of Baruipur in West Bengal, India, on Sunday morning. The alleged murder triggered widespread protests and violence from local people.

Their demonstration saw roads and railway lines across the area blocked. The protesters also vandalised vehicles and hurled stones at police.

Local media reported that a local youth was beaten to death by the protesters. The rioters claimed he had been in the company of the suspects and was believed to be involved in the alleged murder.

Police said two suspects have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder of the girl. A large amount of officers were also deployed to bring the violent protest under control.

Kankar Prasad Barui, Inspector General of Police, said: "The situation is under control. A large police picket has been deployed and no one involved in this heinous crime will be spared. We will ensure that all the accused are arrested and the strongest possible punishment is sought."

The girl's body has been sent to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, police presence has been strengthened across the area due to the risk of further protests.
