Hamburg Police said in a post on X: "According to initial findings, a person allegedly injured several people with a knife in the main station.

"The suspect was arrested by police," the force added.

Parts of Hamburg Central Station have been cordoned off while paramedics treat victims of the attack, according to reports.

Photos from the scene show police tape across a platform, and first responders attending to an injured person.

The station is said to see more than 550,000 travellers daily, second only to Paris-Nord, according to Hamburg.com.

Police in Hamburg said they will provide more information on the incident shortly.

The force said there is "currently a major police operation in #Hamburg on #Hauptbahnhof!"

Some of injured, who are thought to number a dozen, are being treated on trains in the wake of the attack, BILD reports.

According to the outlet, the incident occured on platform 13/14, though there is currently limited information about what occurred.
