Vale Mill in Guernsey, a historic windmill that later served as a Second World War German lookout tower, has been listed for sale at a guide price of £2.95 million. Standing 69 feet (21 metres) tall in the parish of Vale and now renamed The Lookout, the granite building is visible across the island. Planning permission has already been secured to convert it into a striking modern home, making it a rare redevelopment opportunity. The tower stands beside a water-filled quarry, and the sale offers a piece of island heritage and an approved blueprint to bring it back to life. How a wooden windmill built in 1770 became a granite landmark and a wartime lookout postSavills Guernsey said the original structure was built from wood in 1770 before being rebuilt in granite in 1854. It worked as a flour windmill until the German occupation of 1940, when it was turned into an observation tower. The States of Guernsey, the island’s government, was gifted the building in 1968. It sold the mill into private ownership 40 years later, after the structure had fallen into disrepair.Inside the approved plans, four bedrooms, an underground extension and a floating summer houseThe planning consent, granted...
