Glacier Cliffs Retreat And Stabilise: Study tracks rapid ice loss; long-term collapse less certain

Scientists studying Antarctica’s towering ice cliffs have found that glaciers can retreat faster than existing models predict without triggering the catastrophic, self-sustaining collapse some researchers have feared. The findings, reported by MIT News and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), offer new observational evidence that could help refine projections of future sea-level rise. Published in the journal Science in October 2026, the study examined 15,330 satellite observations of ice cliffs along the margins of Earth’s ice sheets. Led by Caroline Needell, a doctoral researcher in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, the research investigated whether exceptionally tall ice cliffs are as vulnerable to runaway collapse as a long-standing scientific theory suggests. The results present a more complicated picture: some cliffs retreated rapidly, but the retreat was often temporary, with glaciers subsequently stabilising rather than continuing to collapse inland.Testing the theory of runaway ice lossThe research focuses on marine ice-cliff instability (MICI), a theory that has influenced scientific discussions about how Antarctica could contribute to rising seas as the planet warm...
