As reported by The Sun, the group had been watching the sunset when the girl tried to get a better view for a picture. She climbed over a fence before slipping and falling to her death.

Detective Peter Hocken, from Queensland Police, said: "She slipped and fell 30 meters onto the rocks below. They located the young lady and provided as much assistance as they could.

"Unfortunately, she passed away on scene due to the severity of her injuries. Life can be a bit unfair, especially at this time of year, just before Christmas."

Meanwhile, a woman tried to help the teenager in the rescue effort but also sustained minor injuries. Firefighters struggled to reach the scene due to the treacherous nature of the rocky ground.

Ryan Dubyk, from Queensland Fire and Rescue, said: "Especially at this time of year, and throughout the year, just please respect the barriers in place. Stay back."

He added that the group of girls had taken an unofficial path to the lookout while there were warnings urging visitors to stay away from the fences. A file will now be prepared for the coroner who will investigate whether safety improvements are necessary in the area.

Moffat Beach is a popular spot, known for its amazing scenery, surfing, swimming and coastal walks. It attracts a number of tourists throughout the year.
