Operations at Munich Airport in Germany have been suspended due to reports of smoke at the air traffic control tower. A large emergency response is underway, with flight diversions to Linz Airport in Austria and the tower building evacuated.

Airport officials said the tower was cleared after a smell of smoke was detected on Sunday evening, while firefighters investigate the cause of the incident. Germany's Federal Police have said it is still unclear what happened, with a spokesperson telling German newspaper BILD: "We don't know exactly yet."

The publication also reported that no flames had been seen at the scene, despite an alarm sounding. Flight operations were disrupted, with delays and diversions affecting passengers. Flights were reported to have resumed normal service from 10:15pm local time.

Conflicting reports of Munich Airport disruption

German newspaper BILD reports that there are differing accounts over the scale of the disruption at Munich Airport following the evacuation of the air traffic control tower.

The airport said: "German air traffic control has stopped flight operations until further notice." However, a spokesperson for Germany's Federal Police said flight operations had only been suspended "in part".

Emergency services remain at the scene as firefighters investigate reports of a smell of smoke inside the tower.

No flames reported yet, according to German media

A spokesperson for Germany's Federal Police has said it remains unclear what caused the incident at Munich Airport's air traffic control tower, where a smell of smoke prompted an evacuation and disrupted flight operations.

According to German newspaper BILD, the spokesperson said: "We don't know exactly yet," adding that no flames had been seen as firefighters continued to investigate the scene.

Emergency services remain at the airport while officials work to establish the cause of the incident and restore normal operations.
