Multiple flights due to depart out of Milan Bergamo Airport have been cancelled after a horrific incident on the runway. A man has died after he was sucked into the engine of a plane, local media reports. All flights at the airport were suspended from 10.20am local time (9.20am BST) until midday following the emergency. It has been reported that the victim is a 35-year-old man and that the plane was on the taxiway preparing for takeoff when the incident occurred.
Some flight operations have resumed at the airport, but others have been cancelled completely. Air traffic resumed at 12pm local time (11am BST) as an investigation into the incident gets underway. The airport has confirmed a total of six flight cancellations so far. Airline Volotea said that the incident happened after the flight had boarded. Italian news outlet 24Ore reports that the person who died was allegedly being pursued by police officers.

The airport said in a statement on social media: "SACBO announces that flight operations at Milan Bergamo Airport were suspended from 10:20 am to 12:00 pm due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway. The causes of the problem are currently being investigated by the authorities. Air traffic resumed at 12:00 pm."
Meanwhile, the airline added: "We're aware that one individual has sustained serious injuries involving the aircraft engine. More information soon."
As well as cancellations, a number of flights have been delayed at the airport. Additionally, a number of flights that were due to land at the airport were forced to divert elsewhere.
Ryanair flight FR 2871 from Vilnius was diverted to Verona, while Ryanair flight FR 4041 from Porto was diverted to Malpensa.
