Hundreds of people have been evacuated after a wildfire began spreading through a popular tourist area of France. Firefighters are working to tackle the blaze in Argelès-sur-Mer, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales along the mediterranean Coast. A water-bomber helicopter has been deployed over the area, along with 90 firefighters on the ground, according to the Forest Fire Prevention and Reporting Association.

The association added that the 350 occupants of the village have been evacuated. This comes amid a wildfire in Marseille that forced 400 people to be evacuated. Roughly a dozen homes were destroyed and 63 others damaged, Interior minister Bruno Retailleau said. About 100 people also suffered light injuries.

Wildfire raged in same location 2 years ago

Two years ago, Argelès-sur-Mer was the scene of another wildfire that prompted the evacuation of 3,500 people.

The blaze broke out between the town and Saint-Andre, with 650 firefighters sent to tackle it.

Stephanie Bodinier, 49, who was in Argeles-sur-Mer with her husband and daughter, said: "We were in the pool and we saw smoke and ashes. When I saw the planes, we took our things."
