Six people have reportedly been injured after reports of a shooting in Nimes, southern France. One person was left fighting for their life, according to one French media report.

There was speculation the incident was part of a turf war between rival drugs gangs. The Express has not been able to independently verify the claim.

Authorities in the city have told local media an investigation is underway.

Local mistook bangs for firecrackers

An unnamed local has said their sister called as they were coming home from work to warn them to stay away.

They told MidiLibre: "She told me not to go home, there were shots right in front of [my] building. At first, we thought they were firecrackers..."

Automatic weapons may have been used, report says

MidiLibre has reported that it appears people opened fire with what could have been rifles or even automatic weapons.

The French news outlet speculated that the shooting could be linked to a recent war between drug traffickers.

This hasn't been confirmed by authorities in France and MidiLibre doesn't cite a source.

Not the first time Nimes' streets plagued by violence

This is not the first time the streets of Nimes have seen serious violence.

In August 2023, a 10-year old child was killed in the city.

Authorities said the youngster was probably caught up in crossfire during a battle between drug traffickers.

Soon after an 18-year-old was gunned down in an ambush, according to the Mirror.

Local official confirms shooting, French media reports

Nimes' deputy public prosecutor has reportedly confirmed the shooting in the Valdegour neighbourhood.

MidiLibre reported the DPP saying there were "several" injuries and an investigation has been launched.

Initial reports have said one person was seriously injured and they are "probably" in a critical condition.

French media reports shots reportedly heard in an area around Avogadro Square in the Valdegour neighbourhood of Nimes.

News outlet MidiLibre reports explosions heard late this afternoon which appeared to be gunfire.

The publication described the incident as a shootout with heavy weapons.
