The Foreign Office has updated its advice for Brits travelling to Turkey this summer. The government's foreign affairs department has warned of wildfires and said tourists could be asked to leave their accomodation.

It comes after forest fires in the city of Izmir forced Adnan Menderes Airport to ground all flights on Sunday (June 29). A number of flights were cancelled and tourists were left stranded as fires raged in the coastal area. Brits are now urged against lighting fires or discarding cigarettes in risk areas while they visit Turkey.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "Wildfires happen frequently in Turkey during summer.

"You could get a fine or prison sentence for lighting a fire of any kind or discarding cigarettes in risk areas such as woodland. Look out for signs that tell you fires, barbeques, and smoking are prohibited."

They added: "If there is a wildfire in your area, local authorities may tell you to leave your accommodation. Follow the directions of local authorities.

"If you see a wildfire, call emergency services on 112."

The recent wildfires saw people evacuated from the tourist resort of Foça. The inferno was fanned by strong winds and tore through local neighbourhoods.

A person was arrested for allegedly starting the fire with gasoline. Turkey's Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said the resident was accused of "causing a forest fire intentionally".

Devastating photos show firefigters working to fight the flames as they ravaged cars and buildings. A total of 625 crew members, 47 fire engines and six helicopters were deployed.
