A FEMALE engineer has been crushed to death after the brakes on a steamroller malfunctioned.

The young engineer, Rafaela Martins de Araujo, 27, was taken to Lagomar Emergency Care Unit  but did not survive her horrific injuries.

Rafaela was an employee of MJ2 Construction, which provides services to Petrobras oil firm where the tragic accident occurred.

She was the technical manager of the construction, according to local media.

The steamroller was being used in the site's waste shed area when its brakes malfunctioned and the operators lost control of the vehicle, and crushed Rafaela.

The horrible incident occurred on Macae, Brazil on October 7.

A civil engineer, Rafaela graduated in 2020 from the University of Mogi das Cruzes.

Petrobras stated that it was "deeply saddened" by the death of the engineer and said it was "deeply dismayed" by the case.

The company said: "The victim's family is receiving assistance from Petrobras and the company MJ2.

Petrobras has notified the appropriate agencies and will form a committee to investigate the causes of the sad event."

Petrobras informs that engineer Rafaela Martins de Araújo, an employee of the company MJ2, a service provider for Petrobras, died on the morning of October 7 as a result of an accident with machinery on the access road to the warehouses at the Cabiúnas terminal, in Macaé.

The worker was rescued and transported to UPA Lagomar (nearest location), where her death was confirmed.

The victim's family is receiving assistance from Petrobras and the company MJ2.

Petrobras has notified the appropriate agencies and will form a committee to investigate the causes of the sad event.

Débora Simoes, director of the local Oil Workers Union of Northern Fluminense (Sindipetro-NF), said: " We are deeply saddened by what happened and we offer our support to the grieving family.

"No one leaves home to go to work expecting to lose their life.
"I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends."

Sindipetro-NF said in a statement: "The union is still gathering more information by contacting the management of the Cabiúnas Terminal and the workers at the base."

It is unclear if the equipment had previously presented any problems.

The Civil Police are also investigating the workplace incident.
