With lights out for the 2025 season of Formula One in Australia finally upon us, all eyes are turning towards the stars of one of the richest sports in the world. F1 is televised in over 180 countries and generates around £1.9 billion every year.

Cities like Monaco and Singapore pay millions to host their race weekend and brands like Rolex and Red Bull also bring in substantial revenue. Even a car itself can cost up to £14.6 million a year, according to Motor Sport Magazine. But who are the richest people in the sport and how much are they worth?

Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team’s owner, Lawrence Stroll takes the fifth spot on Crash's list of F1’s top five billionaires, worth £3.1 billion. In 2018, the Canadian businessman led a consortium of investors in buying the assets of the defunct Force India Formula One team. For the 2019 season, the team name was changed to Racing Point F1 Team, with Stroll’s son, Lance, driving one of the cars.

In 2020, it was announced that Stroll led the Yew Tree Investments consortium to invest £182 million into Aston Martin, in return for a 16.7% stake in the company. The team was rebranded as the Aston Martin F1 Team in 2021.

Piero Ferrari is F1’s fourth richest billionaire, with a net worth of £6.8 billion. Ferrari is an Italian businessman and the only living son of legendary founder Enzo. He is a 10.48% owner of the Ferrari automotive company, of which he is the vice chairman. As of March 12 2025, he is the 304th richest person in the world.

During the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix, won by Fernando Alonso, Ferrari's then team principal Stefano Domenicali persuaded Piero Ferrari to collect the trophy for the team. It was the first time in the history of Scuderia Ferrari that a Ferrari family member would step on the podium of a F1 race.

Mark Mateschitz is the third richest billionaire in F1, worth £30.9 billion. Son of the late Red Bull founder Dietrich, Mateschitz sits 38th in Forbes’s list of the world’s richest people. The Austrian billionaire owns 49% of Red Bull GmbH, the energy drink company.

Last week, Mateschitz acquired the 69-car strong collection of historic grand prix and F1 racing cars established by Bernie Ecclestone for £500 million.

Carlos Slim Helu is Mexico's richest person and the billionaire backer who has supported much of Sergio Perez's career (2011-2024). He is currently the 19th richest person in the world. A business magnate, investor, and philanthropist, his company, Telmex has served as a long-time sponsor of Perez.

Carlos Slim Domit, son of Carlos Slim, revealed last year however, that their support of Perez was "independent" of their backing of Red Bull.

Larry Ellison, chairman, CEO and co-founder of software giant Oracle - Red Bull’s title sponsor - holds the top spot among F1’s richest billionaires. He is currently the fourth richest person in the world, behind Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg. He was Oracle's chief executive officer from 1977 to 2014 and is now its chief

Ellison was seen in the Red Bull Racing Garage during the Miami GP in May last year, alongside Elon Musk. He owns many spectacular cars, including an Audi R8, and, somewhat ironically, a McLaren F1.

For context, Ellison's £112 billion fortune makes him over 300 times richer than the richest driver Lewis Hamilton, who is worth a reported £350 million.
