As Iran faces growing international outrage over its violent crackdown on protesters, Iranian-French actress Mina Kavani is bringing a story of exile and resistance to the Paris stage.

Speaking to Eve Jackson, Kavani reflects on watching events unfold from France while her family remains in Iran. More than a decade ago, she was forced into exile after appearing in the film "Red Rose", which included a nude scene that led to her being publicly vilified by Iranian authorities. Her new play, "Ma maison est noire" ("My House is Black"), opens at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord this week. Written, directed and performed by Kavani, it revives the voice of groundbreaking 1960s Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad, whose books are banned in Iran and who has become an icon of women's freedom.
